What is Vowel? Vowel Worksheets for kindergarten PDF

A vowel is a letter in the English language that can be pronounced independently. There are 5 vowels out of 26 English letters. Those are A, E, I, O, and U. These letters neither utilize the tongue touching the teeth nor rely on the lips coming together to form their sound. Vowel sounds are made with the open cavity of the mouth back to the larynx. The other 21 letters are called Consonants. English words can not be formed without Vowels. Each word must have at least one vowel. The word EDUCATION has all the 5 vowels in a single word.

Types of Vowels

Based on the function and sound the vowels generate they are classified into two groups.

  • Long Vowel and
  • Short Vowel
What is Vowel?
What is Vowel?

A long vowel sounds like the vowel letter itself. For example, Eat, Ape, You, etc. In general, when two vowels are put next to each other or the letter E is placed at the end of the word, A long vowel sound is generated.

Short vowel sounds are pronounced in a short form as compared to long vowels. In general, when a vowel is followed by a consonant, it is a short vowel sound. For example, Taxi, Gift, Cut, etc.

Do remember that there are instances where Vowel can function as Consonant and vice versa.
